The artefact — the compass
Ljocha packed it like everything else: map, compass, antibiotics. He checks it every fifteen minutes. He does not let it fall – not even when the bear comes. A compass is physics, he says. A magnetic field. It cannot lie. Then they walk south-west for four hours and stand on the same stone again. The compass did not lie. The map did not lie. And the dog goes west – to where the needle does not point.
In a basement shop in Kyiv lies an old compass whose needle never comes to rest. There is no sign above the door: Namenlos.
